Mining was hard work and took its toll on those that worked underground. Miners often suffered from injuries, diseases and longterm physical and psychological effects of working underground. Increasingly the health and safety of the miners became a prime concern for owners and managers. The welfare of the miner and the mining community became a movement in itself raising funds, awareness and support.
