Pit Nurses
Each coalfield had a medical officers and pit nurses who often looked after several pits. The costs of any medication or treatments administered were covered by the Coal Board and the nurse would often go underground to injured miners and accompany them to hospital if required. The medical team at the pit played an important role in encouraging men to have small injuries treated, and also in preventative medicine.
