Miners' Memorial Garden - Lives Lived, Lives Lost
Our Miners’ Memorial Garden celebrates and commemorates the courage and camaraderie of our miners, and the close-knit families and communities that supported them. A place for quiet contemplation and reflection, the Garden allows all who visit us to share memories of what coal mining has meant to them over many generations.
At the very heart of the Garden stands a specially-commissioned art installation, ‘Lives Lived, Lives Lost’, the concept of renowned public artist Stephen Broadbent. Standing almost three metres high and curving around in a sweeping arc, the Corten steel screen holds your personalised glass check securely in place.
The Garden’s official opening took place on 15 November 2015. Why not take your place in history by donating a handcrafted glass check to this ground-breaking art installation? Click the link below to remember the unsung mining heroes and communities that made Britain great.
Monies raised by the glass check donations will be used to develop the art installation further, and to maintain the Miners’ Memorial Garden for all to enjoy and appreciate.
How to make a donation
The easiest way personalise and donate your check is online, by clicking on the button above. Donations are taken securely online via Sage Pay (please note that Sage Pay does not support IE8 or older in Windows XP). If you would prefer though, you can also download our glass checks appeal form on the right and send it with your payment direct to the Development Office at the Museum.
If you would like to make your donation by international payment, please email us to receive details of our IBAN and BIC.
Once your glass check has been handcrafted, it will be delivered direct to the Museum as part of a larger group of checks. We will hold twice-yearly events to celebrate and commemorate your mining memories here at the Museum, and you will be invited to join us to see your glass check take its place in the art installation.
