Giving to the Collections

Thank you for considering to gift something to the Museum’s historic collections. We are the guardians of the deep, the custodians of the coal, we are the keepers of the stories and the treasurers of the memories. We will pass them on.

As we go deep into the heart of what coal mining means to us and this nation we need to carefully choose the objects that best tell the stories and represent the industry. We unfortunately don’t have the space to collect everything we would like so we can’t accept everything offered to us. Some of the reasons why we may not be able to take a donation are; duplication, condition or where it falls outside our Collecting Policy.,

All items offered for donation are considered carefully by our Collections team, unfortunately we are unable to accept any items on site, either at reception or sent through the post, that haven’t been discussed with our Collections team first.

You can send details of your item(s) to Collection Enquiries or our Librarian. Please include as much information as you can about the item(s), photographs are really helpful too.

Or you can bring your item(s) to one of our Donation Days which are held on the first Thursday of every month from 10am to 4pm.

You can also telephone 01924 848806 and ask to speak to a member of the Collections team or the Librarian.

We regret that we are not in a position to accept everything that is offered to us. We have a limited amount of resources and space in which to care for and display the objects in our collections, so we do have to think carefully about what we accept. Some of the reasons why we may not be able to take a donation are; duplication, condition or where it falls outside our Collecting Policy.
