A cardox shell is a device used to break coal and a safer alternative to using explosives. It would be inserted into a shothole and when fired would release high-pressure carbon dioxide from a charge inside the shell. This shockwave of pressure would break the coal around the shell without causing an explosion. This example was a dummy, a shell used for training purposes to educate young miners.
