Get hands-on with history this February Half Term with an action packed week of events and activities! Explore the great outdoors with our nature backpacks, see mining stories come to life, get creative with free crafts, and so much more.

Time Tunnel

£5.50 per child, £6.50 per adult, pre-booking advised

Be transported through the centuries as you are taken through almost 200 years of mining history thanks to state-of-the-art technology. You will travel through time and discover the incredible stories of coal mining through the centuries.

Family Weaving Workshop
Wed 18, Thu 19, Fri 20 February, 11am-12.30pm
£10 per family (max 4 people), pre-bookable

Explore loom, circle, and stick weaving inspired by the beautifully woven seats and decorative emblems of our newly restored Voysey chairs and table, using tactile textiles to craft joyful creations for your living spaces.

Minecraft Mania
Saturday 21 February, 10am-4pm, find out more about Minecraft Mania

Get ready to create, craft, and crack Minecraft codes right here at the Museum! Join us for a full day of Minecraft Mania, perfect for fans of all ages who can’t get enough of the Minecraft universe.

Tales of Coal, Care and Community Life

Discover how welfare above ground gave miners and their families support, and a sense of belonging, through interactive storytelling.

Makers’ Shed

Have you spotted the stunning restored chairs in our gallery? They’ve inspired our half term Makers’ Shed, where you can try your hand at weaving in our free craft activities. What wonderfully woven masterpiece will you make to take home? Let your imagination run wild!

Explore the darkest corners of the Museum to discover the story of an adventurous pit pony.

Horsekeeper Talks

Visit Eric, Ernie, Finn and Al. Join us for our Horsekeeper talks at 12pm, see what they are fed at 2.30pm.

Discovery Spots

Discover the daily routines of miners, from the start to the end of their day, in this fun family tour!


Visit us this half term for a fantastic family day out, take a walk around our Nature Trail, visit the Adventure Playground, enjoy delicious food in the café, explore discovery spots, and lots, lots more!
