Brian Elliott book launch at the National Coal Mining Museum for England

Join mining historian Brian Elliott, at 10.30am on Saturday 10 May for the launch of his major new publication MINERS AND THE GREAT WAR. The special event will feature a Q&A session and book signing.

Based on new research, and ten years in the making, Brian’s book, published by Barnsley-based Pen and Sword, is the first comprehensive study of miners’ roles in the First World War.

During the event Brian will share untold stories of coal miners who served in all the armed forces and risked their lives fighting in the war. Discover the real reasons behind their volunteering and why they were sought by the Army, even after mining was deemed a ‘protected workforce’ in 1916.

Learn about extraordinary acts of gallantry by miners, especially on the Western Front, where a subterranean war of unbelievable scale emerged. Remarkably, about one in twelve Victoria Cross recipients were former mineworkers, far more than any other occupational group.

Brian will also discuss the challenges faced by mining communities after the Armistice, including poverty, unrest, and the impact of the Spanish flu pandemic.

The morning will also include the revealing of new small permanent displays at the museum, sharing the stories of miners during wartime, ahead of a major exhibition in 2028.
