This Miners at Work Loan Box includes the tools and equipment that were used by miners during the working day. Explore the conditions and elements that the miners had to endure on a day-to-day basis and learn how technologies and health and safety have changed over time.

“It brought it to life for the children – they were fascinated by the smokey smell and how small the pay container was. They loved exploring the steel toe capped boots and realising how useful these were – the same with the lamp and they all talked about how scary it must be to only have that light. They were fascinated just by the coal and that it came from underground as they’d never seen or heard of it before. It was great to compare the new and old helmet. Basically kids are fascinated by what has gone before if they can feel connected then they get a much bigger understanding.” – Year 3 Teacher
