We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Interim Mine Manager to lead the safe and effective operation of our historic mine and museum, both above and below ground. This is a pivotal leadership role, ensuring the continued safety, compliance, and operational excellence of a nationally significant heritage site.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will work closely with the CEO and senior colleagues to manage a multi-disciplinary team, uphold the highest standards of health and safety, and contribute to a positive and forward-thinking organisational culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe operation of the mine and museum estate, including all buildings and underground areas.
  • Lead and manage the Deputy Mine Manager, Mine Engineers, and Safety Manager, ensuring effective deployment of all staff in line with museum policies.
  • Oversee the maintenance, repairs, and housekeeping of the museum estate, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all.
  • Act as a key liaison with external regulatory and industry bodies, including the Mines Rescue Service, Mine Remediation Authority, HSE, and others.
  • Deputise for the CEO when required, representing the museum at senior levels.
  • Champion a positive health and safety culture, working closely with the Safety Manager and wider team to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Manage HR matters for direct reports, including performance management, training plans, and disciplinary or grievance procedures in line with museum policies.
  • Maintain constructive relationships with union representatives and participate in the Joint Consultative Committee.
  • Stay informed of developments in the mining and museum sectors, both nationally and internationally, and commit to ongoing professional development.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Proven experience in mine management or a similar operational leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and compliance in a mining or industrial setting.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and complex estates.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with staff, stakeholders, and external bodies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through change and contribute to a positive organisational culture.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a heritage, museum, or visitor attraction environment.
  • Familiarity with unionised workplaces and collaborative working with staff representatives.
  • Relevant professional qualifications in mining, engineering, or health and safety.
