Lepidodendron Fossil

YKSMM: 2010.939

This fossilised stump is an example of a Lepidodendron, a tree-like plant that existed around 300 million years ago. Fossils like this were found within the geologically strata known as ‘Coal Measures’ which formed in the Carboniferous Period. This particular fossil was found at an opencast site in Gildersome, Yorkshire.
