Due to the forecasted high winds, the Museum will be closed today (Sunday 25 October 2026).
The safety of our visitors, staff, and volunteers must always come first. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Museum on Wednesday 28 October.
The check system showed who was underground at any time, both in case of emergencies and as an early form of
work record. They were also used by miners as tokens to collect their lamp or pay.
