The Wolf Safety Lamp Company was established in Leeds as a distributor for German mining lamp manufacturer Friemann and Wolf. In 1912, the firm want into liquidation. The firm was moved to Sheffield under the new management of William Maurice. At the outbreak of war, the company was bought by Maurice and distanced itself from its German’s roots. He then went on to develop both flame and electric safety lamps more suited to British methods and mining regulations. Wolf’s success led the family firm to expand and in 1933 the company moved to the Saxon Road Works, where they continue to produce lamps today.
