Flame-Safety Lamp

Lamps had to withstand increasingly stronger air currents, as ventilation in mines began to improve by the mid-nineteenth century. The introduction of shields and bonnets, from the 1870s, protected the exposed gauze of Clanny and Mueseler lamps. Bonnets were also found to help control the passage of air through the lamps.
