Following further negotiations with UNISON,industrial action, largely affecting our Underground Tours, is confirmed to take place until Sunday 12 October. Although Underground Tours will be unavailable during this period, theMuseum Remains Open, and continues to share the important history of coal mining with our visitors. The Donald lamp was patented by James Swan Donald in 1886. It was an advance on the tin-can type, with a full-length gauze protected by a bonnet and glass.
Donald was chief lamp-maker for John Mills & Sons, one of the most important early British manufacturers.
