Following further negotiations with UNISON,industrial action, largely affecting our Underground Tours, is confirmed to take place until Sunday 12 October. Although Underground Tours will be unavailable during this period, theMuseum Remains Open, and continues to share the important history of coal mining with our visitors. The Clowes lamp is another example of a lamp developed solely for gas testing. The design was an enhanced version of the well-regarded Ashworth Hepplewhite Gray lamp, and devised by James Ashworth and Professor Frank Clowes in 1892.
