Following further negotiations with UNISON,industrial action, largely affecting our Underground Tours, is confirmed to take place until Sunday 12 October. Although Underground Tours will be unavailable during this period, theMuseum Remains Open, and continues to share the important history of coal mining with our visitors. The Chesneau Lamp was invented by the President of the French Fire-Damp Commission by Mons. G. Chesneau in 1892. It was an improved version of the Pieler lamp. Like the Pieler, it used alcohol and was used only for gas testing.
