Yorkshire Geology Day

We are delighted to welcome Yorkshire Geological Society to the Museum for their annual FREE family-friendly event

  • Displays, hands-on activities and demos
  • Make your own fossil
  • Calculate the size of dinosaurs and work out what they ate
  • Bring your own rocks for slicing
  • See what microscopes can show us
  • Visit a coal seam
  • Go 'down t'pit'
  • Bring your own rocks, minerals and fossils for identification by experts
  • Find your local geology group

Morning session: hands-on activities and demonstrations from local groups and societies

10.45am: Underground tour of Caphouse colliery entering via the drift mine accompanied by a geologist and ex-miner guide

11:15am: Underground tour of Caphouse colliery

12pm: Surface walk to Hope Pit entrance accompanied by a geologist to look at an exposure of coal-bearing rocks.

Afternoon session: 'Geology and the Natural world'

2pm-5pm: Illustrated talks on the links between geology and living things.

Visit the Blacksmiths in The Forge at Hope Pit, were you can:

  • Look at fossils and minerals under the microscope
  • Make rubbings of fossils to take home
  • Mke your own Plaster of Paris fossils
  • Demonstrations at 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm
