Our Christmas Lights will get you in the mood to celebrate the start of the festive season here at the National Coal Mining Museum!

Friday 25 November 2022 from 4pm to 8pm

The Museum will be hosting a small Christmas Fair, with brass band and choir performances.  For younger visitors, our Makers’ Shed will host a lantern making activity, and families can explore a torchlit trail around the galleries.  Festive treats and food will be available in the Café, and our shop will be open for Christmas shopping. Once darkness falls, the Museum’s buildings and structures will be lit up, and Santa will arrive to collect his coal for stockings and have his photo taken with visitors.

Saturday 26 November and Sunday 27 November 2022 from 10am to 6pm

The weekend will see the start of our well-loved Santa Underground visits to meet Santa in his grotto (pre-bookable).  For younger visitors, our Makers’ Shed will host lantern making activities, and families can explore a torchlit trail around the galleries, and join in storytelling sessions and volunteer pop-up activities.  Festive treats and food will be available in the Café, and our shop will be open for Christmas shopping. Later in the day there will be brass band and choir performances, and as darkness falls, the Museum’s buildings and structures will be lit up.  On Sunday 27 November at 4pm, visitors can bring their lanterns and take part in a lantern parade around the site.

This event is part of Light Up, led by Wakefield Council across the Wakefield district. See more on their website
