Half Term @ Pit
Half Term @ Pit
For Families, For Everyone!
This February Half Term @ Pit join us as we celebrate 100 years of Miners' Welfare and get hands-on with our activities with a mining twist!
Miniature Miners’ Magnificent Playground (Monday-Friday)
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” - thankfully this wasn’t the case for miners, who had lots to do in their spare time all thanks to the Miners’ Welfare. To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Miners’ Welfare, we’re challenging visitors to get experimental with different materials, designing and even helping make a model playground fit for our miniature mining families.
Game On! (Monday-Tuesday)
Do games build the comradery or the competitiveness in your family? On Tuesday February 18 try out our brand new 1940’s themed game developed by our young volunteers in Parkinson’s Yard where Peggy (a 1940’s miner’s wife) will be on hand to make you feel at home with friendly banter. Not only that, but join us for bingo on a (vintage!) bus, try your hand at giant games, dominoes, french skipping and coits in the galleries and board games in the library.
Meet Peggy Thorpe! (Monday-Friday)
Meet Peggy in our back yard reconstruction and learn about her life as a miner’s wife in the 1940’s and the Bevin Boy who boarded with her. Travel back in time and discover the secrets of Peggy Thorpe, a 1940s miner’s wife.
Pithead Bath Explore (16th & 23rd February)
12pm, 1pm and 2pm for 30 minutes, book on arrival
Join us on an interactive tour lead by volunteers around the Pithead Baths. Find out what systems were used and about the people who used them. Understand how revolutionary the showers were and how they boosted morale amongst the workforce.
