Here at the National Coal Mining Museum, we've got great ideas for all the family this Easter! You can uncover brand new galleries at the Coal Mining Museum and get insight into the lives of miners at work and at leisure, explore the underground mine, and experience the playground. This Easter meet characters from inventors to nurses, learn about canaries, make crafts and take part in an egg hunt.
Monday to Fridays and Easter weekend
Join us at the Museum for lots of fun activities and meet our living history characters who will bring to life key characters in history from inventors who prevented explosions to nurses who helped miners every day.
Explore the site with a mining themed Easter Egg Hunt . Pick up a £1 trail sheet from reception and complete it for an egg treat.
Take part in our family craft activities (12pm – 4pm) and find out about how canaries were used in mines.

Is it MAGIC or is it Science? Experience a morning of hands on science for under 5's and their carers at our Wacky Wednesday Science Special. Enjoy simple science activities based on nursery rhymes followed by a magical shadow puppet show. Booking is essential on 01924 848806 £5 per child, £5 per adult.

Our annual moving machinery Family Science Day is back!
See How They Run is a totally unique day powering up the Museum's collection of Marvellous Mining Machinery with experiments, demonstrations, workshops and reenactors.

Launch of Young Volunteer Programme
Young people aged 16-25 are invited to contribute to and create the ‘Life Amongst Diamonds’ festival for young people on 7 July 2019. Every Saturday over a 12 week period the participants will take part in activities, workshops and training to give them all the skills they need to make the festival a success.
Tuesday 16 April 10am – 2pm
Young people aged 14+ with special educational needs and their carers can join Mary and Peggy's Washday Drama Workshop where they will dress up as characters from history and take part in interactive drama games in the reconstructed backyard of a mining home. Places are FREE but booking is essential on 01924 848806.
Wednesday 17 April 10.00 - 11.30 and 12.30 - 2.00pm
Young people aged 14+ with special educational needs and their carers can join Big Jam musicians to create music inspired by the National Coal Mining Museum. Use high tech to create music using iPads, sounds from the Museum. Places are FREE but booking is essential on 01924 848806.
Thursday 18 April 10am – 2pm
Young people aged 14+ with special educational needs and their carers can join Sally and Martha's Drama Workshop where they will and take part in interactive drama games dressed up as characters from history, handling real objects from the Museum collection and visiting the underground mine and the 1842 gallery. Places are FREE but booking is essential on 01924 848806.
Saturday 27 April 2019 10am - 5pm
At Yorkshire Geology Day you can meet the experts from the Yorkshire Geological Society, enjoy hands-on activities and book a special underground tour.
Displays, hands-on activities and demonstrations.
Make your own fossil, bring your rocks for slicing and polishing, see what microscopes can show us.
Bring that puzzling rock, mineral or fossil along for identification by experts.
Sculpture exhibition and demonstration by Desmond Brett MRSS
Underground tours of Caphouse Colliery 10.20am and 11.20am:
A special opportunity to explore the underground through the drift mine accompanied by a geologist and NCMME guide.
When booking please specify the “Geology Tour”. (Groups limited to a maximum of 15. Book in advance: 01924 848806)
Surface walk to Hope Pit 12.00:
Accompany the geologist to look at an exposure of coal-bearing rocks.
Afternoon Session, Geology and the Living World 2pm – 5pm:
Illustrated talks on the links between geology and plants and animals.
Visit the Blacksmiths in The Forge at Hope Pit, were you can:
Look at fossils and minerals under the microscope
Make rubbings of fossils to take home
Make your own Plaster of Paris fossils
Demonstrations at 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm
Plus for the more inquisitive, why not surprise yourself...
- Take an underground tour 140m below the surface with an ex-miner as your own personal tour guide and discover a world beneath your feet.
- Learn more about the museum's galleries and original colliery buildings.
- Marvel at the Furnace Shaft - dare you walk over the 140m shaft?
- Visit our pit ponies Eric, Ernie and Bud and our Clydesdale Finn in the stables.
- Explore the museum's nature trail and see what creatures big and small you can find.
