Pit Ponies

Meet our very own resident celebrities!

The Museum's ponies can be visited in the Stable Yard during the day (usually between 10am - 3pm), so do stop by to say hello and  find out about the role that ponies and horses played in coal mining through the centuries.

At other times, Eric, Ernie, Bud and Finn, our gentle giant Clydesdale horse, can be found in the fields of the Museum site, stretching their legs!

Partnership with Featherstone Rovers

PERCY The Pit Pony is the official mascot of Featherstone Rovers.

Launched prior to the start of the 2017 campaign, in partnership with the National Coal Mining Museum, Percy plays a key role at The ld nutrition stadium.

Designed to pay homage to the town’s heritage, and rich history of deep coal mining, Percy The Pit Pony provides a modern-day twist on Featherstone’s proud past.

General manager Davide Longo said: “We have forged an exciting partnership with The National Coal Mining Museum on the back of Percy’s launch, one which we are extremely excited about.

“We will be working hard to activate our partnership further going forward, while getting Percy out there into the local community to meet everyone connected to Featherstone and, of course, the Rovers.

”Wendy Priest, head horsekeeper at the National Coal Mining Museum, added: “Percy proved to be a great hit when he met our resident pit ponies, Eric and Ernie.

“It is hoped that with this new formed friendship the three will work together at the museum and matches – meeting the community, players, visitors and pony fans in general.

“We are thrilled to be working closely with Featherstone Rovers and look forward to an exciting future with Percy the Pit Pony!”
