The National Coal Mining Museum for England invites visitors to their underground Christmas @ Pit Experience this December.Join in the festivities with the National Coal Mining Museum for England this December for the ultimate Christmas @ Pit experience.

From 26 November until 23 December, families are invited to indulge in an array of festive activities from Santa Underground to brass band performances.

The Museum will be welcoming visitors 140m below ground to visit Santa in his underground grotto. Visitors will see the mine transformed into a winter wonderland with a specially decorated walkway that leads to the Grotto, where visitors can have time to meet Santa and request their Christmas wishes before receiving a gift and certificate.

Families can enjoy the festive Christmas Wishes workshop, on 10 December, where they can make decorations and write wishes for the museum’s Christmas tree.

On 7 December, under 5s can enjoy a craft making Wacky Wednesday Christmas Special, plus enjoy a performance from the Hey Diddles.

For older audiences, on the 12 December the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band will be showcasing a selection of brass band favourites including a selection of traditional and contemporary pieces for their Festive Brass @ Pit performance.

Visitors will also be able to indulge their creative side with a Christmas Wreath Making Workshop on 5 & 7 December or Christmas Flower Arranging workshops on 22 and 23 December.

Visitors can be inspired by the values of generosity and solidarity explored in the new exhibition, ‘A Share of a Pensioner’s Christmas ‘Bonus, where they can listen to the stories children of striking miners whose Christmas was possible due to the generosity of total strangers in December 1984.

Visitors can also participate in the Toy Appeal to recreate the Christmas spirit and consider donating an extra gift to disadvantaged children across Yorkshire. The Museum is asking for donations of new, unwrapped toys and books for girls and boys aged 6 to 11 years old between November and December 2016. Visitors are encouraged to drop off their donated gifts at the Museum’s shop, within its visitor centre. The gifts will then be distributed to disadvantaged children across Yorkshire by Variety, a children’s charity based in Leeds.
