Pupils can meet an expert, take part in role play, handle objects, investigate an idea or solve a scientific problem.

All of our  primary school workshops have been developed with teachers to fuel learning across the curriculum.

Museum workshop: Fire & Forces Science Challenge
12th, 14th, 15th, 16th March 2018 for British Science Week

This interactive & practical workshop explores the power of coal & how simple mechanisms helped miners to do their jobs underground & on the surface too. 

  • Meet the Blacksmiths & experience the power of coal at the forge.
  • Demonstration of working machinery & explore how different mechanisms work.
  • Work as a mining team to complete a science challenge.
  • This is a fun, fast-paced workshop, which shows Science in action!

Duration: 90 min
Group size: up to 17 pupils per workshop (2 available per day)
Cost: £50 per workshop

Outreach workshop: Science Show

Mon 12 March – Fri 16 March 2018 as part of British Science Week

Go back to 1815, to a time when miners worked by candlelight & many miners lost their lives due to gas explosions underground.

Meet the scientific pioneers Sir Humphry Davy & George Stephenson who took different approaches to inventing a safe light source for miners to use.

Using a combination of interactive storytelling & science experiments pupils learn about the dangerous gases underground & how science helped to save lives & changed mining forever.

Practical requirements: Facilitator will need access to a hall & 2 tables.
We do use open flames in the workshop, so this will need to take be taken into account regarding fire alarms.


Suitable for: KS2 pupils
We will travel to schools within 20 mile radius of Museum
Cost: £250/day or £150 per half day.
Maximum of 4 shows per day (10.00, 11.00, 1.00, 2.00)

History Workshops

Full day Immersive Experiences

Imagine it's your first day as a miner!  What will you do? What will you wear? Pupils will certainly get their hands dirty during this interactive, immersive experience. They will spend the day with our mining guides and carry out the daily routines and jobs that a miner did as well as how finding out how miners stayed safe underground. Come prepared for a hard day’s graft.

Be a Victorian Child Miner (KS2)

  • Subject focus: History (Local History, Chronological knowledge beyond 1066)
  • Available on Tuesdays
  • Cost: £135 per 34 pupils 
  • Duration: full day experience inc Hands-On Underground Tour (9.30-14.30)
  • Group size: 34 pupils per session
  • Supporting resources: Victorians loans box

A cross-curricular, immersive experience during which pupils spend the day as Victorian child miners. Activities include role play, creative writing, singing and a STEM challenge. Pupils get to work above and below ground and gain a memorable insight into the lives of children who worked underground. This experience includes a hands on underground tour.

Aunty Brenda's Pit Village Past (KS1 and KS2)

  • Subject focus: History (changes within living memory, Local History)
  • Available: Monday - Friday
  • Cost: £25 per workshop
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Group size: 17 pupils per session
  • Supporting resources: Victorians home loans box, 1930s home loans box

What was it like growing up in a coal mining village? Pupils meet Aunty Brenda in the backyard of her terraced house in 1972. Pupils look at artwork, handle objects and listen to Aunty Brenda’s stories of growing up in a mining community.

Sally/Sam Fletcher, ‘It’s a Hard Life’ (KS1, KS2)

  • Available: Monday-Friday
  • Cost: £25 per workshop
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Group size: 17 pupils per session
  • Supporting resources: Victorians loans box, Victorians Resource Pack

Travel back to the 19th century when women and children were working in mines. What were working conditions like? What jobs did children do? What event happened to change the lives of these people? Meet Sam or Sally Fletcher and take part in role play activities to find out.

Dig Deeper (KS2)

  • Subject focus: History (Local History), Geography (Place knowledge)
  • Available: Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Cost: £25 per workshop 
  • Duration: 30 minutes 
  • Group size: 17 pupils per session
  • Supporting resources: 1980s-themed loans box

Everything you wanted to know about mining but were afraid to ask. Dig Deeper with one of our miners and work together to take apart an interactive model of Caphouse Colliery. Pupils will handle objects and ask questions to find out how mining has changed over the last 100 years.

STEM workshops

Science Show Workshop (KS2)

  • Cost : £50 per workshop
  • Duration : 45 minutes
  • Group Size : 17 pupils per session

Our new explosive Science Show explores the invention of the flame-safety lamp. Pupils will travel back in time to meet the scientific pioneers, Humphry Davy and George Stephenson and find out how their inventions helped to save lives and changed mining forever.

Rocks and Fossils (KS2)

  • Group size: 17 pupils per session

What is coal? How was it formed? What do fossils look like? Make rocks memorable with this hands-on workshop in which pupils investigate rocks and create their own 'fossil' to take back to the classroom.

Fire and Forces Science Challenge (KS2)

  • Subject focus: Science (mechanisms, forces and working scientifically)
  • Available: Wednesdays and Fridays
  • Cost: £50 per workshop
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Group size: 17 pupils per workshop
  • Supporting resources: Look out for images and videos on the website. 

Pupils experience the power of coal at the blacksmith's forge and watch a demonstration of working machinery. Then, working as a mining team they complete a Science Challenge. A fun and practical workshop, which shows Science in action.
