Volunteering April - looking back and moving forwards!

Volunteering at the Museum enjoyed a successful year in 2015. Celebrate these achievements by reading our regular volunteering blog. Discover what was happening this time last year whilst looking forward to each month and find out the news about volunteering in 2016. Perhaps you will be inspired to become one of our valued volunteers!

Last April we were delighted to be a part of Museums Showoff, an open mic night featuring the crème de la crème of the Museum talent in the UK. It was a chance for us to shout about our Wacky Wednesday sessions which have been a hit with under 5s (and their adults!) since their creation. Our team of education, curatorial staff and volunteers put together a fantastic show depicting just how Wacky Wednesday’s came about, the successes and challenges of working in a heritage site – including the sticky task of crafting in the galleries – including glue, crayons and felt-tip pens!

Our team most certainly proved that within a museum you can create something sustainable from the unlikeliest beginning, the most basic resources and the most unlikely personnel!

The busy Easter holiday period saw four weeks of frenzied activity in the Museum and the volunteers were key to ensuring our visitors experience was a success. The volunteers assisted visitors around the site, inspired creativity at the Art Cart and encouraged visitors to nominate their hero or heroine for our new special exhibition in May; they also assisted with workshops and special events – phew!

After visiting Ripon Museums last year, our volunteers are going to be extending a very warm welcome to the Ripon volunteering team as they come along to experience everything the Museum has to offer. We look forward to getting together again and enjoying the activities we have planned for their day.

The volunteers hope to continue visiting Museums and Heritage sites to build partnerships with like-minded, dedicated volunteer teams throughout the year. If you’re part of a volunteer team from a Museum or Heritage site and would like to visit us, please get in touch!
