June Miner of the Month : Shaun McLoughlin

Posted on by Anita O'Donovan

This month we've been talking to our newest recruit Shaun McLoughlin who has joined us following the Kellingley closure where he worked as the mine manager.

Shaun began mining in June 1977 following in his father's and brother's footsteps. Shaun recalls some of his memories..

"The best part of the mining industry is the camradeship, team working, being part of the mining family and planning and executing jobs in a very difficult environment."

So how did he come to work at the Museum?

"I had been talking with friends who worked at the Museum so I moved here just after Kellingley was capped."

And what does Shaun think is the best part of his job?

"Being able to meet the public to talk about experiences gained during 39 years of mining. The best part is seeing the joy and excitement of the young children experiencing the underground tour for the very first time."

If you fancy getting kitted out and embarking on a journey 140m beneath the surface, book one of our special underground tours today!

I met Shaun on an underground tour and he made the whole experience very enjoyable and interesting. His knowledge of mining was endless and I was really impressed and astounded at the work that was required to get coal out of the ground
