Filming a TV advertisement
Q. What do Pot Noodles, David Jason and Johnny Rotten have in common?
A. They have all been involved in filming at the National Coal Mining Museum.
This unique resource has provided the backdrop for a great deal of filming ranging from documentaries (Fred Dibnah was a regular) to travel guides, from drama productions (ITV The Royal) to commercials (Pot Noodle). Some use the surface and its array of mining buildings and views, some go underground (the only coal mine in England where filming can take place), and some think laterally - the original miners' showers have featured as a prison shower block (ITV's Diamond Geezer with David Jason).
Filming underground is possible; it just requires careful planning and must take place outside Museum opening hours. The team at the Museum has plenty of experience (please see below) and will be happy to help in suggesting areas / parts of the Museum or underground that could fulfil a filming need.
List of Recent Filming
- True Heroes - used the underground mine, our train tunnel and several of our guides as extras.
- The Royal - filmed using the cage, and in the locker room.
- Pot Noodle - used the surface and underground - creating a noodle mine
- Diamond Geezer - used the showers and one of our stores to provide a totally blacked-out room.
- Most Haunted Live - held a paranormal investigation utilising much of the site above and below ground.
- Top Gear - ran a feature on an Alfa Romeo filmed at the Museum.
- Documentaries on fossils, Bevin Boys, canals and engineering have all used parts of the Museum.
