Special Exhibition Archive: Basically Banners
6 June until 28 September 2008
This exciting exhibition showcases banners held in the Museum's collections, many belonging to the National Union of Mineworkers (Yorkshire Area). The display will include twenty-four banners, six of which have been specially conserved for the exhibition.
The exhibition tells the story of banners - past, present and future. It explores why they were made and their close links with the trade union movement, as well as unlocking some of the symbolism used.
Visitors will be introduced to banner makers and techniques of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the work that the Museum is doing to protect these fragile objects for the future will be highlighted.
