Special Exhibition Archive: Littleton Colliery

26th January - 26th April 2009

Featuring photographs and interviews by Luke Unsworth, Littleton explores the many changes that Staffordshire's last deep mine, and surrounding area, has undergone since its closure in 1993.

Littleton Colliery opened in 1904 and closed in 1993 causing over 600 job losses.  Having spent his first 10 years living in Cannock, Unsworth felt compelled to visit the pit to record its last day.  Fifteen years on and with the help of Arts Council fuding, he returned to photograph and interview some of its former miners to reflect on what Littleton's closure has meant for them.

Having previously been exhibited at the Museum of Cannock Chase and the Lighthouse, Wolverhampton, Unsworth said

"Bringing the Littleton exhibition to the National Coal Mining Museum is really the climax of the project for me.  The project is very local and indeed personal to the Staffordshire district, so it is fantastic to give it a national platform."
