Current Special Exhibition: Living in a Mining Community

The work by Andy Boag brings this exhibition up to date with his photographs of current working miners from Maltby Colliery in South Yorkshire, and their families.  These contemporary works give contrast to the earlier pieces showing miners in pit gear and at home with their families, showing a little of what living in a mining community means today.

The subject of mining communities has always inspired artists both within and outside the industry, and this selection of paintings, photographs, sculptures and written extracts seek to show how life outside the pit has been represented and the major impact that pits have had on their surrounding communities.

Featuring a range of artwork and photographs from the museum’s collection and contemporary work by the photographer Andy Boag this exhibition shows how artists have portrayed life in a mining community and how communities have been shaped by their local pits.
